How To Do Manoeuvres (new test)
NOTE 1: Main observation whilst reversing straight should always be through the rear window over the left shoulder along with quick all round observations. If you are reversing to the left then over the left shoulder, and if you are reversing to the right then over the right shoulder.
The speed of the car should be very slow (old mans walking pace :)
NOTE 2: The reference points mentioned won't always work for everyone because it depends on how close you sit to the pedals and how tall you are etc. Your instructor will give you another reference point if these reference points don't work for you. It's important for you to remember or make a note of these reference points so you don't have to waste time finding the reference point again the next time you do it.
Parallel Parking
1. P.O.M. (Preparation. Observations. Manoeuvre).
2. Line door mirror with front or back of object car (depending on which way the car’s facing).
3. P.O.M.
4. Reverse until passenger side door pillar lines up with the back or front (depending on which way the car’s facing) of the object car (point of turn).
5. Stop and make observations.
6. Half turn to the left (180 degrees, not full left lock). Remember, stop when the square is on top :)
7.When you can see in the little round mirror that you are getting close to the curb then quick right lock. And another reference point is when the second blue line in the camera touches the curb then quick right lock.
8. Just before car straightens up, 1 + 1/4 turn left to bring tyres straight.
9. Finish with a car length gap behind object car and reasonably close to curb.
Reverse Bay Parking
1.P.O.M
2. Position car about 2 metres away from the start of bay (to avoid cutting the line)
3. Line the third line from the bay you want to enter with your reference point in the passenger window if reversing to the left, or the driver window if reversing to the right. (You will enter the third bay from the line you picked as your reference)
4. P.O.M
5. Quick left lock if reversing to the left and right lock if reversing to the right.
6. Just before car gets straight, 1+1/4 turn right/left to get steering wheel straight and finish with car in the middle of the bay. If car is not in middle of bay as you come in, then steer towards the line you want to get closer to and once car is in the middle, straighten car. If bay parking is done from right, main observation has to be over right shoulder whilst reversing into the bay.
Going Forwards Into A Bay To The Right
1. Line car up at least two metres away from beginning of bay.
2. Line top right corner of right door mirror with the second line of the bay you are entering, the second line is the line which is further away from you.
3. All round observations.
4. Quick full right lock
5. When car straightens up then straighten the tyres by steering 1+1/4 turn left.
Going Forwards Into A Bay To The Left
1. Line car up at least two metres away from start of bay.
2. Line top left corner of left door mirror with the first line of the bay you are entering, the first line is the line which is closer to you.
3. All round observations.
4. Quick full left lock.
5. When car straightens up then straighten the tyres by steering 1+1/4 turn left.
Parking On The Right Hand Side Of The Road and Reversing
1. Check centre and right door mirrors, and look for any oncoming vehicles before moving onto the right side of the road.
2. Move over to the right side of the road and park in a safe, convenient and legal position using the white tack reference point underneath the front windscreen. Keep a steering wheels width from the curb so you don't hit it whilst reversing.
3. When asked to do so, reverse for two car lengths whilst making all round observations.
4. When asked to do so, move out back to the left side of the road, move straight into the left side without staying in the right lane for too long. Before moving out make observations, starting from the right blind spot and finishing at the left blind spot. Indicate if there is anyone to benefit.
